Concert Report
You must attend one LIVE performance of music per term.
This may include:
~ a rock concert
~ your little sister's piano recital ~ orchestra, band, or choir concert (your level or higher, no elementary school performances allowed) ~ a ballet (the musicians are in the pit where you can't see them) ~ a musical ~ "Ms Swallow Approved" school assemblies (live music) |
It CANNOT be:
~ a lip-syncing concert (because the performer is _not really_ singing!)
~ something you saw on TV or in a movie (even if it is a live broadcast...You must share the same air molecules as the person as they are performing) ~ your brother singing in the shower for 45 minutes ~ watching anything on YouTube (if there is a screen between you and the performer, it isn't live) ~ anything sung by anyone during a church service (is it appropriate to critique a worship service? I also cannot give you an assignment to attend a worship service if I want to keep my teaching certificate valid) |
Please make sure the performance is at least 45 minutes long. Completely fill out the CONCERT REPORT FORM, answering the questions with as much detail as possible (remember, I was probably not at the concert with you...give me enough detail to understand your reactions). Attach the concert's program to the Concert Report Form and turn it in. If the concert does not have a program, you had to pay $25 to get a program or you ate your program at intermission because you were hungry, please have your parents sign the bottom of the form.
If you choose to see Music and the Spoken Word you MUST have a program with your Concert Report Form (they recycle many extras each week). This concert is broadcast live every Sunday morning on TV. Watching it live on TV, even with a parent signature, does not fulfill the assignment.
I grade all forms turned in within ONE WEEK of the concert's date.
The LAST day to turn in your Concert Report for the term is the Friday BEFORE the end of the term (on your Participation Sheet you will see a tiny question mark on the due date for that term...it is to remind you of the question: Did you do your Concert Report yet or not?). Please do not wait until the very last second to do this assignment as failure to turn in a Concert Report will drop your grade by a third (from an A to an A-. So that a missing Concert Report assignment will only affect a student's grade by a third, sometimes I will adjust this grade in Skyward. Your students may receive points in Skyward with the note: "Adj. for missing"). Additional Concert Reports may be done for 20 points of extra credit but only with Ms. Swallow's approval (subject to the same due date as regular Concert Reports).
An easy way to complete this assignment: Plan to attend the CMMS band or orchestra concert for this assignment...you get to see your friends perform, you already know how to get to the school, and it is FREE!!!! If you are looking for a concert to attend, check out the JSD Fine Arts Calendar (this lists all of the music performances in our district). Don't forget the Utah Symphony and Opera (they have special student-priced tickets, make sure you call ahead to ask about them).
