PERFORMANCES
Utah Music Standard 7-8M.P.2:
Students demonstrate an understanding of musical elements & notational literacy through participation in a live performance

Performance is an important and integral part a study of music.  We will have opportunities to perform in-class and will have only ONE performance near the end of the semester.  This out of the school day performance is REQUIRED.  During performance, students demonstrate the knowledge, skills & understanding of what we have been learning in class.  Each student plays an integral and irreplaceable part in our ensemble. Missing ensemble members during performance can create differences in balance, over-all blend & most importantly, the sonic experience of those immediately around them.  Participating in a music ensemble is very similar to participating in competitive sports -- it is fairly silly to go to all the practices & then miss the game.

Attendance at all concerts is MANDATORY
missing the concert WILL affect a student's grade.

QUICK MATH BREAK: Remember that the performance is worth 20% of the final grade for the term.  If the total grade equals 100% and the student does not attend the concert they will receive ZERO points for their 20% Performance grade.  100 - 20 = 80% = C+ on the grade percentage scale.  Not attending the once-a-term, usually-shorter-than-an-hour-in-total-length performance means you will be receiving a C+ for your final grade (provided you had already earned 100% with all your other assignments and assessments). MATH BREAK OVER

Please arrange your schedule now so that you will be able to attend.  If there is a legitimate, extenuating conflict, please notify Ms. Swallow at the beginning of the term or before three weeks from the performance date, notified by a parent in writing.  Students who have notified Ms. Swallow of extenuating circumstances, in writing, will be allowed to complete an additional assignment to make up missing performance points.  We are a team and every student contributes to the success of our sound.

Acceptable Reasons to Miss a Concert
